Protection
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 3371

I seek refuge for you two in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and poisonous reptile, and from every evil eye.

U'īdhu-kumā bikalimātillāhit-tāmmah min kulli shayṭānin wa hāmmah, wa min kulli 'aynin lāmmah.

When to Read

We all desire to shield our loved ones from unseen harms. The Prophet ﷺ demonstrated this perfectly when he would recite this profound dua for his beloved grandsons, Al-Hasan and Al-Husain, to protect them. Following this beautiful Sunnah, you can recite this dua for your children, grandchildren, or anyone you deeply care for, especially when you sense a need for spiritual safeguarding. It's particularly potent as a daily supplication for children before they go out or before sleep. It can also be recited when they are exposed to new environments, or if you feel they might be vulnerable to the evil eye. While the original hadith uses the dual form ('kumā' for two people), the essence of seeking refuge in Allah's perfect words against various evils, including the evil eye, is a timeless act of worship applicable for general protection when recited for another.

How to Read

When the Prophet ﷺ sought refuge for Al-Hasan and Al-Husain, he would say this dua. Emulating his example, you can recite this for your child or loved one by placing your hand on their head or chest, making the supplication with sincere intention, and gently blowing on them. This practice is a beautiful form of **ruqyah** (spiritual healing through supplication). If you are reciting it for a single male, you would adapt the wording to say 'U'īdhu-ka' (أُعِيذُكَ – I seek refuge for *you*, singular male); for a single female, 'U'īdhu-ki' (أُعِيذُكِ); for two individuals, 'U'īdhu-kumā' (أُعِيذُكُمَا) as in the original hadith; and for a group, 'U'īdhu-kum' (أُعِيذُكُمْ). This personalization ensures the intention is clear. Always remember to have firm conviction that all healing and protection come solely from Allah.
