أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan.

A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajeem

When to Read

This fundamental dua is our first line of defense against Shaytan's whispers and mischief. It's something the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to recite in several situations: * **When starting Quran recitation:** To cleanse our hearts and minds and prepare us to receive Allah's words without distraction. Allah says, "And when you recite the Quran, [seeking refuge] in Allah from Satan, the expelled [from all goodness]" (An-Nahl 16:98). * **When feeling tempted or experiencing intrusive thoughts:** If you find yourself having negative thoughts, urges to sin, or feel a presence trying to mislead you, this is the immediate response. * **Before entering homes:** To seek Allah's protection for your family and property from Shaytan's entry and influence. * **During prayer (Salah):** If you feel distracted or feel Shaytan trying to interfere with your focus, reciting this can help. There's a specific instance where the Prophet ﷺ described struggling with Shaytan during prayer and seeking refuge.

How to Read

This dua is simple yet profound. It's best recited with sincerity and a clear understanding of its meaning – acknowledging Allah's supreme power and our own need for His protection. You should: 1. **Intend it sincerely:** Make sure your heart is truly seeking Allah's refuge. 2. **Speak it clearly:** Utter the Arabic words with conviction. 3. **Visualize the protection:** Imagine Allah's shield surrounding you. 4. **Follow with actions:** After seeking refuge, make a conscious effort to resist temptation and focus on righteous deeds.

Virtues & Benefits

The primary benefit is safeguarding yourself from Shaytan's corrupting influence. By seeking refuge, you invoke Allah's protection, which is the strongest shield. Shaytan has no power over those who sincerely turn to Allah for safety. It purifies your intentions, clarifies your mind, and strengthens your resolve to do good. This simple act is a constant reminder of Allah's might and our reliance on Him, preventing us from falling prey to Shaytan's traps.

‘Uthman bin Abu Al-‘As (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he complained to Allah's Messenger ﷺ about the Shaytan that came between him and his prayer and his recitation of the Quran. So, Allah's Messenger ﷺ said to him: 'That is a Shaytan called Khinzab. If you perceive him, seek refuge in Allah from him and strike your left thigh with your hand.' He did that and Allah took it away from him. (He did it) three times. — Sahih Muslim 2203
