Protection
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahri-r-rijal.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is excellent to recite daily, especially in the morning and evening. It's particularly potent when you feel the stirrings of loneliness, anxiety, or when facing challenges that might lead to isolation, like debt or oppressive circumstances. Making it a habit can build a strong shield against these emotional and practical burdens.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, focusing on each phrase and its meaning. It is recommended to raise your hands slightly, as you would when making other supplications. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to repeat these words, so aim for consistency in your recitation. It's best to say it facing the Qiblah, though not strictly necessary, and with a clear heart.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a cornerstone for seeking Allah's protection from a wide spectrum of troubles that can lead to or exacerbate feelings of isolation. By seeking refuge from worry (hamm) and grief (hazan), you are asking Allah to safeguard your mental and emotional well-being. Incapacity ('ajz) and laziness (kasal) can lead to a feeling of being left behind or unable to connect with others. Cowardice (jubn) might prevent you from reaching out, and stinginess (bukhl) can create barriers. Overwhelming debt (ghalabatud-dayn) and the subjugation of men (qahrur-rijal) are practical situations that can force a person into isolation. Regularly reciting this dua helps cultivate reliance on Allah and a proactive spirit to overcome these challenges, fostering inner peace and better social connection.
