Protection
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and the punishment of the Fire, and the trials of wealth and poverty, and the trials of the grave, and the evil of the trial of the Antichrist. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and the punishment of the Fire, and from the evil of the trials of wealth and poverty. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from a heart that does not feel humbled, and from a supplication that is not heard, and from a soul that is not satisfied, and from knowledge that does not benefit. I seek refuge in You from these four.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, wa 'adhab an-nar, wa fitnat al-ghina wal-faqr, wa fitnat al-qabr, wa shar fitnat al-masih ad-dajjal. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, wa 'adhab an-nar, wa min shar fitnat al-ghina wal-faqr. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min qalb la yakhsha', wa min du'a' la yusma', wa min nafs la tashba', wa min 'ilm la yanfa'. A'udhu bika min ha'ula'i al-arba'.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is a powerful supplication to be recited regularly, especially after every prayer. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua as a protection against specific torments and trials that can afflict us in this life and the hereafter, including the severe experiences related to death and the grave.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt plea to Allah. Focus on the meaning of each phrase as you utter it. It is recommended to raise your hands slightly, as is customary when making dua. Ensure you are in a state of purity if possible, though it can be recited at any time. The Prophet ﷺ would often repeat certain supplications three times to emphasize their importance.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua offers immense protection. It seeks refuge from the grave's torment, which is a reality for every soul. It also protects from the Hellfire, the ultimate consequence of disbelief and disobedience. Furthermore, it shields against the temptations and trials associated with both wealth and poverty, and the significant test of the grave and the Dajjal. By seeking refuge from a heart that lacks humility, unanswered prayers, an insatiable soul, and unbeneficial knowledge, we aim for inner peace and spiritual growth. This dua encapsulates a holistic approach to seeking Allah's protection against the most feared aspects of our existence.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge in Allah from four things, saying: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, wa 'adhab an-nar, wa fitnat al-ghina wal-faqr, wa fitnat al-qabr.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306). Another narration includes: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, wa 'adhab an-nar, wa min sharr fitnat al-ghina wal-faqr, wa sharr fitnat al-qabr, wa sharr fitnat ad-dajjal.' (Sahih Muslim 589). He would also say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min qalb la yakhsha', wa min du'a' la yusma', wa min nafs la tashba', wa min 'ilm la yanfa'. A'udhu bika min ha'ula'i al-arba'.' (Sahih Muslim 589).
