Seeking Allah's Protection from the Envy of Those Close to Us

Protection
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, the reversal of Your good health, the suddenness of Your wrath, and all that You are displeased with. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have put forward, and from the evil of what I have withheld, and from the evil of what I have concealed, and from the evil of what I have made public, and from the evil of what I have corrupted, and from the evil of what I have set right, and from the evil of our souls, and from the evil of all moving creatures You are seizing the forelock of. Indeed, my Lord is on a straight path.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri ma qaddamt, wa min sharri ma amsakt, wa min sharri ma asrart, wa min sharri ma azhART, wa min sharri ma afsadt, wa min sharri ma asliht, wa min sharri anfusina, wa min sharri kulli dabbatin anta akhidun binasiyatiha, wa inna Rabbi 'ala siratin mustaqim.

When to Read

This comprehensive supplication is perfect for reciting at any time, especially when feeling vulnerable or sensing any ill effects. It's particularly beneficial in the morning and evening, as taught by the Sunnah, but can be recited whenever one feels the need for overarching protection. Consider reciting it when you notice changes in relationships or when you feel uneasy about the dynamics with those around you, including close friends.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and a firm belief in Allah's power to protect. Utter the words clearly, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. It is recommended to raise your hands slightly, as one would when making du'a, and to blow gently into your hands and wipe them over yourself after reciting. This practice is rooted in the Sunnah for certain protective duas.

Virtues & Benefits

This du'a offers a broad shield against harm. By seeking refuge in Allah from the loss of blessings, the decline of well-being, and His displeasure, we are proactively safeguarding ourselves. It covers protection from the consequences of our past actions (good or bad), our hidden thoughts and intentions, our public actions, and even from the hidden evils we might have caused or failed to prevent. It also encompasses protection from the evil within ourselves and from any harmful influence of others, reinforcing our reliance on Allah's ultimate control. The concluding phrase, 'Indeed, my Lord is on a straight path,' affirms our trust in His justice and guidance.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah bin Khubaib (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Recite: Say: He is Allah, the One... (Surah Al-Ikhlas), and the two protective Surahs (Al-Falaq and An-Nas) in the evening and morning three times each, and they will suffice you for all things.' (Sahih Abu Dawud 5082, Sahih At-Tirmidhi 3575). While this specific du'a is from Sahih Muslim, the principle of seeking comprehensive protection through specific supplications is well-established. Another narration from Sahih Muslim (2708) includes the extensive du'a provided above.
