Seeking Allah's Protection for Children: The Prophetic Dua Against Evil Eye and Harm

Protection
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 3371

I seek refuge for you both in the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and poisonous pest, and from every evil, envious eye.

U'eedhukumā bikalimātillāhit-tāmmah, min kulli shayṭānin wa hāmmah, wa min kulli 'aynin lāmmah.

When to Read

You can recite this powerful dua anytime you feel your child might be vulnerable or needs protection. The Prophet ﷺ recited it regularly for his beloved grandsons, Hasan and Husain. It's particularly beneficial: * **Daily Morning & Evening:** As part of their routine athkar (remembrances). * **Before Sleep:** Recite it over them before they go to bed. * **When Leaving the House:** To protect them as they venture out into the world. * **During Illness or Distress:** If you see signs of sickness, discomfort, or an unexplained change in their well-being, recite it with sincerity. * **After Encounters:** If they've been in a crowd, especially where there might have been excessive admiration or envy. Remember, it’s a proactive measure, a shield you offer them through Allah's permission, not just a reaction.

How to Read

Reciting this dua is an act of deep tawakkul (reliance on Allah) and a beautiful sunnah. 1. **Intention:** Make a sincere intention to seek Allah's protection for your child. Believe firmly that Allah alone is the protector. 2. **Recite Clearly:** Say the Arabic words clearly and correctly. While the hadith uses the dual form (أُعِيذُكُمَا - for two children), you can adjust it for your child/children: * For one boy: *U'eedhukā* * For one girl: *U'eedhuki* * For three or more children: *U'eedhukum* 3. **Gentle Breath (Optional):** Following the Prophet's ﷺ practice with other protective duas, you can gently blow over your child after reciting, perhaps placing your hand on their head or chest. This is a sunnah practice and not a strict obligation for the dua's validity. 4. **Feel the Meaning:** Understand what you are asking for – protection from devils, harmful creatures, and the penetrating gaze of the evil eye. This helps in bringing presence to your prayer.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua carries immense blessings because it is a direct sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who himself learned it from our father Ibrahim (peace be upon him) for his own children. * **Comprehensive Protection:** It's a holistic shield against unseen dangers: the whispers and mischief of jinn (shayateen), harmful insects and creatures (haammah), and the potent, subtle harm of the evil eye (al-'ayn al-lammah) and jealousy. * **Spiritual Legacy:** By reciting this, you are continuing a beautiful spiritual legacy that traces back to Prophet Ibrahim ﷺ, linking your family to the practices of prophets. * **Strengthens Tawakkul:** It reinforces your reliance on Allah, acknowledging that all protection comes from Him alone. This act of seeking refuge in Allah's perfect words affirms His absolute power and sovereignty. * **Peace of Mind:** Knowing you've taken an active step, following the sunnah, to protect your children can bring a deep sense of peace and tranquility to your heart.

Source & Authentication

Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge with Allah for Al-Hasan and Al-Husain and say: > **Arabic:** أُعِيذُكُمَا بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لاَمَّةٍ > > **Translation:** "I seek refuge for you both in the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and poisonous pest, and from every evil, envious eye." > > **Transliteration:** *U'eedhukumā bikalimātillāhit-tāmmah, min kulli shayṭānin wa hāmmah, wa min kulli 'aynin lāmmah.* Then he would say, "Your father (Ibrahim) used to seek refuge with Allah for Isma'il and Ishaq with these very words." — Sahih al-Bukhari 3371
