Dua for the Protection of Children

Protection
Sahih HadithThe Book of Prophets 3371

I seek refuge for you both in the Perfect Words of Allah from every devil and poisonous creature, and from every envious eye.

U'idhukuma bikalimatillahit-tammah min kulli shaitanin wa hammah, wa min kulli 'aynin lammah.

When to Read

As parents and guardians, we carry a deep concern for our children's well-being. This profound dua, taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, offers a powerful spiritual shield. Recite it for your children daily, particularly when they are exposed to environments that might challenge their innocence or safety. This includes before they interact with screens and modern technology, as its diverse harms — from inappropriate content and cyberbullying to addiction and mental health challenges — can be subtle and pervasive. It's also ideal to say it before they leave home for school, before they sleep, or whenever you feel a need to invoke Allah's protection over them from all visible and invisible threats.

How to Read

When reciting this dua, you will need to adjust the pronoun based on the number and gender of your child/children. The original Hadith uses `أُعِيذُكُمَا` (U'idhukuma), meaning 'I seek refuge for *you both*', as the Prophet ﷺ recited it for Hasan and Husain (may Allah be pleased with them). * **For one boy:** Say `أُعِيذُكَ` (U'idhuka) * **For one girl:** Say `أُعِيذُكِ` (U'idhuki) * **For two children (boys, girls, or mixed):** Say `أُعِيذُكُمَا` (U'idhukuma) * **For three or more children:** Say `أُعِيذُكُمْ` (U'idhukum) You can gently blow on your child/children after reciting the dua, as was part of the Sunnah for seeking refuge.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a comprehensive invocation for protection against all forms of evil. When you recite this for your children, you are essentially entrusting them to the perfect, unchangeable words of Allah, seeking His ultimate refuge. This encompasses protection from literal devils (shayatin), harmful creatures (poisonous reptiles/insects), and the spiritual harm of the evil eye (envy that can cause illness or misfortune). In our modern context, the 'evil of what He has created' can be understood to include the unseen spiritual harms prevalent online, the psychological impact of digital distractions, and even the dangers posed by inappropriate content or predators lurking in virtual spaces. By reciting this dua, you are not just saying words; you are affirming your reliance on Allah as the ultimate protector, seeking His intervention against every imaginable and unimaginable harm, ensuring a holistic shield for your children's physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
