A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq

When to Read

Recite this dua when you find yourself in a situation or place that feels unsafe or poses a potential threat. This could be entering a new town where there's known trouble, traveling through a remote area at night, or even encountering a situation in your daily life that feels concerning. The key is recognizing the potential for harm and turning to Allah for protection.

How to Read

Recite this dua three times in the morning and three times in the evening. However, if you find yourself entering a dangerous area unexpectedly, you can recite it once with sincere intention and focus. It's a plea to Allah's perfect words, which encompass all of His creation and His decree, to shield you from any harm.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua specifically for protection against all forms of evil and harm stemming from creation. By reciting it, we are invoking Allah's ultimate power and wisdom, trusting that His perfect words will create a barrier between us and any potential danger. It fosters a sense of reliance on Allah (tawakkul) and calms the heart when faced with uncertainty.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that a man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah, what have you encountered during this night?" He said: "A stung, a scorpion bit me, and I said: 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq' (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created), and it did not harm me." (Sahih Muslim 2708). This hadith highlights how the Prophet ﷺ himself used this dua for protection against physical harm.
