اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَافِيَةَ فِي دِينِي وَدُنْيَايَ وَأَهْلِي وَمَالِي.
O Allah, I ask You for well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth.
Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afiyata fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali.
When to Read
This is a profound and comprehensive supplication that can be recited at any time, but it's particularly powerful when said in the morning and evening. It encapsulates a request for holistic protection, guarding against the snares that can pull us away from our faith and cause us distress in both this life and the next.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and conviction, raising your hands as is customary when making dua. Imagine the 'traps' of this world – heedlessness, temptation, excess, greed – and the potential harms in the hereafter, such as regret and punishment. Ask Allah with certainty that He will grant you protection and well-being. It's a request for a state of safety and soundness, encompassing all aspects of your life.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is incredibly comprehensive. 'Al-'Afiyah (العَافِيَة) signifies protection from all evil, distress, and harm. By asking for it in our 'deen' (religion), we seek protection from misguidance, doubt, and actions that displease Allah. In our 'dunya' (worldly affairs), we ask for protection from financial ruin, sickness, and difficult trials. For our 'ahl' (family), it's a plea for their safety, guidance, and well-being. And for our 'mal' (wealth), we pray for its preservation from loss, unlawful earnings, and being a source of fitnah (trial). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also taught us to seek refuge from a grave harm, saying: > **Arabic:** اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ زَوَالِ نِعْمَتِكَ، وَتَحَوُّلِ عَافِيَتِكَ، وَفُجَاءَةِ نِقْمَتِكَ، وَجَمِيعِ سَخَطِكَ. > **Translation:** 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the loss of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure.' > — Sahih Muslim 2739 This combination of seeking 'afiyah' and seeking refuge from specific calamities offers a robust shield against the multifaceted challenges of life and the hereafter.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not leave these words unturned when he supplicated against the enemy: 'Allahumma inni as'alukal-maseer' (O Allah, I ask You for the ease of achieving victory). And he used to say when supplicating for himself: 'Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwata wal-'afiyata fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahumma-sturni 'awrati wa a'mini raw'ati. Allahumma-hfazni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi wa 'an yamini wa 'an shimali wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bika an ugtala min tahti.' (O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in my religion and my worldly affairs. O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being concerning my family and my property. O Allah, conceal my faults and secure me from fear. O Allah, protect me from before me and from behind me, and from my right, and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in You from being smitten from beneath me). (This hadith provides the broader context of the Prophet's ﷺ comprehensive supplications, and the specific phrase we are focusing on is a key part of his personal requests for well-being.)
