O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of the Fire, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the Dajjal.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabr, wa min 'adhabin-nar, wa min fitnatil-hayati wal-mamat, wa min sharri fitnatil-masihid-dajjal.
When to Read
This is a comprehensive supplication that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often recite in his prayers, especially after the Tashahhud, before concluding his salah. It is a profound plea for protection against some of the gravest trials, both in this life and the hereafter.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere conviction and a humble heart, seeking Allah's ultimate protection. Focus on the meaning of each phrase as you utter it. It's most commonly recited in the final sitting of prayer, before the Tasleem (saying 'As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah').
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encompasses seeking refuge from four critical perils: 1. **The Torment of the Grave (`Adhab al-Qabr`):** The grave is a transitional phase, and the believer's experience there can be either a garden of paradise or a pit of hellfire, depending on their deeds and Allah's mercy. This supplication acknowledges the reality of the grave and asks for Allah's shield. 2. **The Punishment of the Fire (`Adhab an-Nar`):** The ultimate consequence of disbelief and disobedience is Hellfire. Seeking refuge from it is a constant prayer for every Muslim. 3. **The Trials of Life and Death (`Fitnat al-Hayat wal-Mamat`):** This covers the tests and temptations we face throughout our lives, as well as the afflictions and pressures of the moment of death. 4. **The Evil of the Trial of the Dajjal (`Fitnat al-Masih ad-Dajjal`):** The appearance of the Dajjal is one of the greatest trials humanity will ever face. Seeking refuge from his deception and widespread mischief is a vital part of a believer's protection.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When any one of you finishes the (last) Tashahhud, he should seek refuge in Allah from four things, and say: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of the Fire, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the Dajjal.' Then he should say whatever he wishes.' (Sahih Muslim 588). In another narration in Sahih al-Bukhari (1377), it is mentioned that the Prophet ﷺ would supplicate thus: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of the Fire, and from the trials of the Dajjal, and from the afflictions of the Dajjal, and from the trials of the life and the death.'
