Dua for Protection from the Harms of My Senses and Desires in the Digital Age

Protection
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5074

O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my faults and secure me from what causes me distress. O Allah, guard me from before me and from behind me, from my right and from my left, and from above me. I seek refuge in Your magnificence lest I be swallowed up from beneath me.

Allahumma inni as'alukal 'afiyata fi dunyaya wa akhirati. Allahumma inni as'alukal 'afwa wal 'afiyata fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahumma-stur 'awrati wa aamin raw'ati. Allahumma-hfizni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi wa 'an yaminee wa 'an shimalee wa min fawqee, wa a'udhu bi 'azamatika an ughtala min tahtee.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is excellent to recite in the morning and evening, fulfilling the Sunnah of seeking Allah's protection. In our digital age, where our senses are constantly bombarded with images, sounds, and temptations online, this dua becomes even more vital. We can also make it a habit before engaging with screens, asking Allah to shield our sight from what is impermissible, our hearing from harmful speech, and our minds from corrupting influences. It's a plea for holistic protection – safeguarding our faith, our families, our possessions, and our very selves from all forms of harm, seen and unseen, whether it stems from the digital world or elsewhere.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, raising your hands slightly as is customary when making dua. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, truly internalizing the request for Allah's comprehensive protection and well-being. It's best recited with a humble and supplicating heart, seeking refuge in Allah's immense power and grace against any potential harm that might befall us, especially through the avenues presented by modern technology.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication encompasses a vast request for 'Afiyah (well-being), which is a profound blessing from Allah. It covers spiritual well-being (religion), worldly well-being (dunya), protection for our loved ones (ahl), and our sustenance (mal). The specific plea for guarding from all directions – front, back, right, left, above, and below – highlights the all-encompassing nature of the protection we seek. In the context of the digital age, this translates to protecting our eyes from inappropriate content, our ears from gossip and backbiting, our tongues from harmful words, and our hearts from lustful desires and doubts that can easily be amplified online. Seeking refuge in Allah's greatness emphasizes that no protection is more complete than His.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to teach them (his companions) to seek refuge with Allah from the evil of the Day of Gathering, and from the evil of the punishment in the Hellfire, and from the evil of the oppressive rich man, and from the evil of the treacherous scholar, and from the evil of the unchaste old woman, and from the evil of the unchaste young woman. He used to say: "O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my faults and secure me from what causes me distress. O Allah, guard me from before me and from behind me, from my right and from my left, and from above me. I seek refuge in Your magnificence lest I be swallowed up from beneath me."
