O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my semen.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyi
When to Read
This is a powerful supplication to recite daily, especially in the morning (after Fajr) and evening (after Maghrib) prayers, as part of your regular remembrance of Allah. It's particularly relevant when you anticipate encountering difficult conversations, gossip, or harsh words, or if you've recently been affected by slander.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, raising your hands slightly as is customary for supplication. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, truly seeking Allah's protection. Imagine Allah's shield enveloping you from the ill effects of spoken words, whether they are directed at you or spoken by you.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is comprehensive, seeking protection from the internal and external manifestations of harm. By specifically asking for refuge from the 'evil of my tongue,' we are acknowledging our own potential to cause harm through speech and seeking Allah's help to guard against it. It also protects us from the 'evil of others' tongues' – slander, backbiting, and malicious gossip that can damage reputations and sow discord. Protecting our hearts, hearing, and sight from evil also contributes to overall righteous conduct and spiritual well-being.

Narrated Abdullah bin Mas'ud: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina' (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment). And he used to seek refuge in Allah from the evil of what you know. And he used to say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri ma 'amiltu, wa min sharri ma lam a'mal' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done, and from the evil of what I have not done). And he used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the declining of Your favor, and the passing of Your protection, and the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure). He also used to say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharr sam'i, wa min sharr basari, wa min sharr lisani, wa min sharr qalbi, wa min sharr maniyyi' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my semen).
