Dua for Protection from the Evils of Betrayal and Deception

Protection
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2710

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the Ggiving away of Your favors, and the change of Your protection, and the suddenness of Your punishment, and all Your displeasure. And I seek refuge in You from miserliness, and I seek refuge in You from defeat, and I seek refuge in You from being defeated (by others).

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Wa a'udhu bika minal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika minal-hazimah, wa a'udhu bika an ughbata.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is excellent to recite when you feel vulnerable, when dealing with potentially untrustworthy individuals, or simply as a regular morning and evening supplication to seek Allah's protection over your affairs. It's particularly relevant when entering new partnerships or situations where trust is a key factor. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often recite this dua in the morning and evening, making it a Sunnah practice for general protection.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely with conviction, raising your hands as you would during other supplications. Understand the meaning of each phrase and direct your plea to Allah alone. It is best recited with a clear mind and a humble heart. Repeating it in the morning and evening, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ, amplifies its benefit.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers a broad spectrum of protection. It safeguards against the loss of Allah's blessings (ni'mah), the reversal of good health and well-being ('afiyah), and sudden divine retribution (niqmah). It also seeks protection from Allah's anger (sakhat). Furthermore, it specifically asks for refuge from negative character traits like miserliness (bukhl) and from being overcome or defeated (hazimah, ughbata), which can encompass both physical and emotional/spiritual defeat, including deception and betrayal by others. By seeking refuge in Allah, we acknowledge His power to shield us from all harm, seen and unseen.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to teach his companions a prayer, saying: 'One of you should say: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Wa a'udhu bika minal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika minal-hazimah, wa a'udhu bika an ughbata.' (Sahih Muslim 2710)
