When to Read
This is a foundational dua for every Muslim. It's especially vital to recite it frequently during times of doubt, confusion, or when faced with differing opinions in religious matters. Recite it after every obligatory prayer, or at least once daily, particularly in the morning and evening.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart. Understand that guidance is solely from Allah (Glory be to Him). As the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this specific supplication, it's best to recite it as taught, focusing on the meaning and the request to Allah. Make it a habit, turning to Allah with a feeling of dependence and reliance.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua directly addresses the core need for steadfastness in faith. The heart is the seat of belief, and it's Allah (Glory be to Him) who controls its direction. By asking Him to keep our hearts firm on His religion, we acknowledge our vulnerability and His power. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself would often make this dua, showing its immense importance for all Muslims navigating the complexities of life and the temptations of misguidance. It's a shield against deviation and a constant reminder to seek Allah's help in maintaining one's deen.

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The most frequent supplication of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he was with me was: 'O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, why do you supplicate so often?' He said: 'O Umm Salamah, no son of Adam is safe from it (i.e., deviation). It is between the Fingers of the Most Merciful (Allah). He turns it (the heart) as He wills.'
