Protection
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1552

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from being crushed to death, I seek refuge in You from falling from a height, I seek refuge in You from drowning and burning, and I seek refuge in You from reaching decrepitude. I seek refuge in You from Satan possessing me at the time of death, and I seek refuge in You from dying in Your cause while fleeing from the battlefield, and I seek refuge in You from dying from a poisonous sting.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal hadmi, wa a'udhu bika minat taraddiy, wa a'udhu bika minal gharaqi, wal haraqi, wal harami, wa a'udhu bika an yatakhabbaṭani ash-shayṭanu 'indal mawt, wa a'udhu bika an amuta fi sabilika mudbiran, wa a'udhu bika an amuta ladigha.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught his companions to recite for protection against various calamities, including drowning and fire. It's beautiful to make this a part of your daily remembrance, perhaps in the morning or evening adhkar, to invoke Allah's protection over yourself and your loved ones throughout the day and night. Being mindful of such dangers, and seeking Allah's shelter before they occur, is a sign of a strong reliance on Him.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and heartfelt reliance on Allah. Understand the meaning of each plea for refuge, visualizing yourself being shielded by Allah's mercy. It's best recited when you are in a state of ritual purity, facing the Qiblah, and with a clear and present mind. However, the primary condition is sincerity; Allah hears the supplications of all His servants, regardless of circumstance.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates seeking refuge from significant worldly dangers that can lead to a painful end: being crushed (al-hadm), falling from a height (at-taraddiy), drowning (al-gharaq), burning (al-haraq), and severe old age (al-haram). It also seeks protection from spiritual harm at the point of death (Satan's influence) and specific ways of dying. By encompassing these pleas, we are actively seeking Allah's broad protection in our lives, acknowledging that He alone is the Protector.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): He said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach them to say this supplication in case of these dangers: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal hadmi, wa a'udhu bika minat taraddiy, wa a'udhu bika minal gharaqi, wal haraqi, wal harami, wa a'udhu bika an yatakhabbaṭani ash-shayṭanu 'indal mawt, wa a'udhu bika an amuta fi sabilika mudbiran, wa a'udhu bika an amuta ladigha.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from being crushed to death, I seek refuge in You from falling from a height, I seek refuge in You from drowning and burning, and I seek refuge in You from reaching decrepitude. I seek refuge in You from Satan possessing me at the time of death, and I seek refuge in You from dying in Your cause while fleeing from the battlefield, and I seek refuge in You from dying from a poisonous sting.)
