Dua for a Newborn's Laughter and Blessing

Pregnancy & Newborn
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3525

I seek refuge for you with the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every beast, and from every evil eye. I say: O Allah, make him pious and intelligent, grant him good character, make him righteous towards his parents, and bestow Your blessings upon him.

U'eethuka bikalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaitanin wa hāmmatin, wa min kulli 'ainin lāmmatin. Aqūlu: Allahumma-j'alhu taqiyyan zakiyyan, wa hab lahul khuluqa sawiyyan, waj'alhu li-walidayhi ṣāliḥan, wa 'alayhi bārik.

When to Read

This beautiful supplication is ideally recited when a newborn begins to smile or laugh, or at any time after birth. It's a way for parents and loved ones to actively seek Allah's protection and blessings for the child, acknowledging their innocence and potential. You can also make a more general version of this dua for any child, asking for their well-being and piety.

How to Read

When you see the newborn smile or chuckle, gently place your hand on their head or chest and recite this dua. You can repeat it with sincerity, focusing on the meaning and asking Allah to accept your supplication. It's a practice rooted in the Sunnah, showing our reliance on Allah for the protection and upbringing of our children. You can also offer this dua during your daily prayers or anytime you think of the child.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua carries profound benefits. Firstly, it invokes Allah's protection through His 'perfect words' (kalimatillahit-tammati), shielding the child from unseen evils like the devil (shaitan) and harmful influences (hāmmah). Secondly, it seeks protection from the evil eye ('ain), a concept well-recognized in our tradition. Most importantly, it's a comprehensive prayer for the child's character and future: asking for piety (taqwa), intelligence (zakā'), good moral conduct (khuluq sawiyy), and righteousness towards parents, all of which are foundational for a blessed life. The final part asks for Allah's barakah (blessing) to be showered upon the child, encompassing all aspects of their life.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to seek refuge for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn, saying: 'I seek refuge for you both with the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous thing and from every evil eye.' Then he would say: 'Abraham sought refuge with them (these words) for Ishmael and Isaac.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 3374, Sunan Ibn Majah 3525, also mentions the addition for the child's character and parents)
