Dua for a Newborn's Innate Inclination Towards the Adhan

Pregnancy & Newborn
Hasan HadithAl-Mu'jam Al-Kabir 2898

O Allah, make him a believer in You, one who trusts in You, and relies on You, and establish him for prayer, and make him call out to You (i.e., for the Adhan).

Allahumma ij'alhu mu'minan bika, wa thiqatan bika, wa tawakkulan 'alayka, wa aqimhu lis-salati, waj'alhu yu'adhdhinu laka.

When to Read

This dua is deeply meaningful to recite for a newborn, ideally shortly after birth, perhaps during the tahneek (rubbing a date on the palate) or naming ceremony. It's a beautiful supplication to ask Allah to instill a love for prayer and the Adhan in the child from the very beginning of their life. You can also continue to make this dua for your child as they grow.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a hopeful heart, facing the Qiblah if possible. Gently hold the newborn while supplicating. The emphasis is on the heartfelt plea to Allah for the child's spiritual well-being and connection to the acts of worship that define our faith. It's not just about the words, but the feeling behind them – a parent's earnest desire for their child's deen to be strong.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication seeks for the child several foundational blessings: firm faith (iman), complete trust (thiqah), and reliance (tawakkul) on Allah. It asks for the child to be established in prayer (salat), which is the cornerstone of Islam after the declaration of faith. Most uniquely, it requests that the child be made to call out to Allah, referencing the Adhan, the call to prayer that signifies a living connection to the Divine and the Muslim community. Such a dua plants the seeds for a life centered around worship and remembrance of Allah.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: 'The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ visited his daughter Umm Al-Fadl, who had given birth to a boy, and she named him Al-Fadl. The Prophet ﷺ said: "May Allah bless you in your son and make him the righteous." Then he said: "O Allah, make him a believer in You, and a truster in You, and one who relies on You, and establish him for prayer, and make him call out to You (i.e. for the Adhan)." It was narrated from Al-Tabarani in Al-Mu'jam Al-Kabir, and classified as Hasan by Al-Albani in Sahih Al-Jami' Al-Saghir, 1222.
