O Allah, make him blessed, and make him a supporter of Your religion, and bless him with wisdom and barakah, and make him among the righteous.
Allahumma igh'alhu mubarakan, wagh'alhu nasiran lidinika, warzuqhu hikmatan wabarakatan wagh'alhu minas-salihin.
When to Read
This dua is beautifully suited for reciting at the 'Aqiqah (the sacrifice on behalf of a newborn), or during the naming ceremony. It can also be recited anytime after the birth, as a parent's prayer for their child's spiritual and moral development, which naturally encompasses an appreciation for the beauty of Islam.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and heartfelt supplication. Gently place your hand on the newborn's head or shoulder as you make the dua. It is also beneficial to have a righteous person, such as a scholar or elder, recite this dua for the child.
Virtues & Benefits
This powerful dua, narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), asks Allah to bestow blessings, aid in supporting Islam, grant wisdom and divine favor, and make the child among the righteous. When we pray for our children to be righteous, we are implicitly praying for them to appreciate the truth, beauty, and wisdom inherent in Islamic teachings, including its artistic expressions. This prayer plants the seed for a life that seeks and recognizes beauty in accordance with Allah's creation and commands.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "When a child is born, the Prophet ﷺ was brought to him. He would ask for a name and then bless the child. He said: 'A naming ceremony is held on the seventh day, and he should be given a name.'" (This hadith, in similar variations, discusses the practice of naming and praying for the newborn. While this specific wording of the dua is not in the primary narration, it is derived from the general supplications the Prophet ﷺ made for children and is a well-accepted form of dua for newborns, asking for righteousness and blessedness in accordance with the Sunnah.) The prayer is a reflection of the broader supplications for children, asking Allah to make them a source of good and a means of support for the Deen.
