I seek refuge for him/her in the Perfect Words of Allah, from every devil and every venomous creature, and from every evil eye.
U'iidhuhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammatin, wa min kulli 'aynin lammati
When to Read
This dua is beautiful to recite when a newborn is first brought home, or when you notice them becoming more aware of their surroundings. It's also perfect for murmuring over them during feeding, diaper changes, or when they seem unsettled. The intention is to wrap them in Allah's protection from the very beginning of their journey in this world, fostering an innate sense of security rooted in their Creator.
How to Read
Gently whisper this dua over your newborn, perhaps while holding them close or stroking their head. It's about infusing them with the light and protection of Allah's words. You can repeat it multiple times, focusing on the sincerity of your supplication. Breathe gently over them after reciting, as it's believed to carry the blessing and protection of the words.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua invokes Allah's complete protection for the newborn. The 'Perfect Words of Allah' (Kalamātullāh al-Tāmma) are understood to encompass the divine decree and protection that safeguard against all forms of harm, be it from subtle spiritual influences ('shaytan' - devils, 'hammah' - venomous creatures) or the harmful effects of the evil eye (''ayn lammah'). By reciting this, we are consciously imprinting the concept of seeking refuge in Allah upon our child from their earliest moments, establishing a foundation of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and reliance on Him.
Source & Authentication
The narration details that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ visited his grandsons Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them) when they were very young, he prayed: 'I seek refuge for you both with the Perfect Words of Allah, from every devil and every poisonous creature, and from every evil eye.' Then he would say: 'I seek refuge for you both with Allah's Perfect Word from every Satan and every harmful thing, and from every evil eye.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 3371)
