I seek refuge for you in the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and every poisonous creature, and from every envious eye.
U'eezuka bikalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammantin, wa min kulli 'aynin lammatin
When to Read
This is the supplication the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would make for his grandsons, Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them). It's a beautiful dua to recite for a newborn baby, asking Allah to protect them from harm, both physical and spiritual. You can whisper this over your child regularly, especially after birth, or whenever you feel the need for extra protection and a strong, loving bond to be fostered between you and your little one.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, visualizing Allah's protection surrounding your child. You can gently blow on the child after reciting, or place your hand on their head while making the dua. It's a practice rooted in the Sunnah, demonstrating our reliance on Allah for the well-being of our children and the strength of our family ties.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua invokes Allah's powerful, perfect words for protection, shielding the child from unseen evils like devils ('shaytan') and harmful influences ('hammatin', which can refer to pests or venomous creatures, and by extension, any harmful influence). It also guards against the 'envious eye' (''aynin lammatin'), a concept recognized in Islamic tradition where ill will or envy directed towards someone can cause harm. By reciting this, we are actively seeking Allah's shield for our child's physical health, emotional well-being, and for the development of a strong, loving bond rooted in divine care.
Source & Authentication
The narration states that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge for Hasan and Husayn, saying: 'I seek refuge for you both with the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and every beast, and from every poisonous thing and every evil eye.' Then he would say: 'Your father (meaning Ibrahim - peace be upon him) used to seek refuge with them (the words of Allah) for Isma'il and Ishaq.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 3308)
