A Gentle Foundation: Introducing Tawhid to Our Newborns

Pregnancy & Newborn
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 1851

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ تَقِيًّا، وَزَكِيًّا، وَرَبِّهِ صَالِحًا

O Allah, make him pious and pure, and make him righteous in his Lord.

Allahumma-j'alhu taqiyyan, wa zakiyyan, wa Rabbahu saliha.

When to Read

This is a beautiful dua to make for your newborn right from the start. You can recite it immediately after birth, during the Azaan and Iqamah (if you're performing them for the baby), or anytime you hold your child. It sets a spiritual intention for their upbringing, asking Allah to nurture their connection to Him.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and love, directing your supplication towards Allah. It's a personal dua, so you can whisper it to your baby or say it while holding them. The essence is the heartfelt request to Allah to establish the core of faith – acknowledging Him as their Lord – within your child's heart.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly asks Allah to instill piety (taqwa) and purity (zakah) in the child, which are foundational qualities for a believer. More importantly, it asks that the child be righteous *in their Lord* ('wa Rabbahu saliha'). This subtle phrasing emphasizes that their righteousness isn't just in outward actions but in their understanding and submission to Allah, the very essence of Tawhid. It's about building a relationship with the Creator from the earliest moments.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Musa that he said: 'I had a baby boy, and I took him to the Prophet (ﷺ). He named him Ibrahim, and gave him a date to chew, and supplicated for him for Allah's blessings. He said: "Make him pious and pure, and make him righteous in his Lord." (Sunan Ibn Majah 1851). The hadith mentions that the narrator, Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him), had a son, and the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) named him Ibrahim, chewed a date for him (a practice known as 'tahnik', often done for newborns), and then made this dua.
