Dua for Parents to Overcome Fear and Anxiety in Old Age

Parents
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 3977

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is executed. Your decision concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept in Your absolute knowledge, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the remover of my worries.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'al al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is perfect for reciting during times of stress, worry, or when you feel overwhelmed by life's challenges. Specifically for parents facing the twilight years, it can be a source of immense comfort and strength. Make it a regular part of your routine, perhaps after Fajr or before bed, or whenever you sense your parents (or yourself, if you are in that stage) are experiencing anxiety. You can also recite it and make intention for your parents' well-being.

How to Read

Recite with sincere intention and full concentration, visualizing Allah's mercy and power. It's beautiful to recite this dua for your parents, placing your hand on their chest or shoulder if possible, while making the dua. Even if you can't be with them physically, the intention and sincere supplication are potent. Remember that the Prophet ﷺ would often turn to the Qur'an and Allah's names and attributes when seeking relief from distress.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua draws directly from the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. By asking Allah to make the Qur'an the 'springtime of the heart,' we are seeking its life-giving, refreshing, and joyful influence. The Qur'an has the power to illuminate our understanding, calm our anxieties, and heal our sorrows. This comprehensive asking, using the vast knowledge of Allah's names, ensures we are asking in the most effective way, seeking a deep spiritual and emotional refuge that can significantly help overcome fear and anxiety, especially in old age where such feelings might intensify.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'No person suffers any anxiety or grief, and then says: O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is executed. Your decision concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept in Your absolute knowledge, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the remover of my worries – but Allah will take away his anxiety and grief, and replace them with happiness.'
