Marriage & Wedding
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1068

O Allah, I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of what You have destined for it (her nature/disposition). And I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what You have destined for it (her nature/disposition). O Allah, I ask You for its provision and its covering (modesty/concealment).

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayraha wa khayra ma jabaltaha 'alayh, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma jabaltaha 'alayh. Allahumma inni as'aluka nafaqataha wa sitraha.

When to Read

This dua is specifically for a man when he is about to get married. It is recited after the Nikah (marriage contract) is completed, before consummating the marriage, or even during the wedding ceremony itself if possible. It’s a beautiful supplication for seeking Allah's blessing on the union and ensuring the wife possesses qualities that lead to a contented and appreciative relationship.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and focus, placing your right hand on the forehead of your wife (if possible and appropriate in the context of your wedding). Speak with humility and a clear understanding of what you are asking Allah for. It is also beneficial to reflect on the meaning of the words and to actively embody the qualities of contentment and appreciation in your own conduct.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ teaching on seeking the best for one's spouse and the union itself. By asking Allah for the 'goodness' and 'provision' of the wife, and seeking refuge from 'evil,' a husband prays for a harmonious marriage built on mutual respect and contentment. The emphasis on 'covering' (sitr) highlights seeking modesty and chastity, essential for a blessed family life. This supplication encourages a proactive approach to building a marriage based on Allah's guidance and blessings.

Source & Authentication

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘As reported that Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said: When any one of you marries a woman, he should take hold of the forelock of her forehead, and utter the dua for blessings, and say: O Allah, I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of what You have destined for it (her nature/disposition), and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what You have destined for it (her nature/disposition). And when any one of you buys a camel, he should take hold of its forelock and make a similar utterance. [Sahih Muslim 1068]
