The Prophet's Prayer for Forgiveness: A Tahajjud Du'a

Night Worship & Tahajjud
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 771

O Allah, forgive me my sin, all of it, the minor and the major, the first and the last, the apparent and the hidden.

Allahumma-ghfirli zambi kullahu, diqqahu wa jillahu, awwalahu wa akhirahu, 'alaniyatahu wa sirrahu

When to Read

This powerful supplication is especially potent during the night prayer (Tahajjud). The quiet solitude of the night, when the world sleeps, is a prime time to turn to Allah with sincerity and vulnerability, seeking His boundless forgiveness. Reciting it after your Rak'ahs of Tahajjud, or even during the Witr prayer, amplifies its effect.

How to Read

Recite this du'a with deep sincerity, raising your hands as you would during prayer. Reflect on the meaning of each part of the du'a, acknowledging both the small and large sins, those done openly and those done in secret. It is best recited during prostration (Sujud) in your night prayer, as the Prophet ﷺ taught us that a servant is closest to his Lord when he is prostrating. You can also say it when you make du'a in the latter part of the night.

Virtues & Benefits

This du'a encompasses a comprehensive plea for forgiveness, covering every aspect of our transgressions. By seeking forgiveness for *all* sins, big and small, past and present, open and hidden, we are striving for complete purification. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this du'a, highlighting its significance. When we sincerely seek forgiveness, especially during blessed times like Tahajjud, Allah's mercy is vast and He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful. Allah says, 'And those who, when they commit an immorality or do injustice to themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins – and who can forgive sins except Allah? – and do not persist in what they have done while they know.' (Al-i 'Imran 3:135).

‘Abdullah b. Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, how is it that we find the praise of the dwellers of Paradise in the Qur’an in one way and the praise of the dwellers of Hell-fire in the Qur’an in another way?’ Upon this it was said: ‘By Allah, I do not know.’ Then Jibril came and said: ‘O Muhammad, Allah says: He who is pleased with Allah as Lord, Islam as religion and Muhammad as Prophet, it is incumbent upon Allah to grant him pleasure, and he who is miserly in spending wealth and stingy in fighting the enemy and is anxious to be in authority over his companions, he will be anxious for that and will not be pleased with it.’ Then Jibril came back and said: ‘O Muhammad, Allah says: He who is pleased with Allah as Lord, Islam as religion and Muhammad as Prophet, Paradise is incumbent upon him.’ He (the Prophet) said: ‘O Allah, cause me to be pleased with You.’ He said: ‘O Allah, cause me to be pleased with You.’ He said: ‘O Allah, cause me to be pleased with You.’ He then said: ‘O Allah, forgive me my sin, all of it, the minor and the major, the first and the last, the apparent and the hidden.’ And when he said that he did not leave any sin which he had committed, except that he sought forgiveness for it.
