Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1120

O Allah, to You belongs all praise. You are the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and whatever is within them. And to You belongs all praise. To You belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is within them. And to You belongs all praise. You are the Light of the heavens and the earth and whatever is within them. And to You belongs all praise. You are the King of the heavens and the earth and whatever is within them. And to You belongs all praise. You are the Truth, and Your promise is true, and meeting You is true, and Your speech is true, and Paradise is true, and the Fire is true, and the Prophets are true, and Muhammad ﷺ is true, and the Hour is true. O Allah, to You I have submitted, and in You I have believed, and upon You I have relied, and to You I have turned, and by You I have disputed, and to You I have judged. So forgive me what I have sent forth and what I have delayed, and what I have concealed and what I have declared, and what You know better than I. You are the One who sends forth and the One who delays. There is no god but You, and there is no might nor power except by You.

When to Read

This profound dua is recited by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during his long night prayers (Qiyam al-Layl). It's especially fitting to recite when one feels a deep connection to Allah during the quiet hours of the night, seeking His mercy and forgiveness after prolonged worship. It can be recited during the voluntary night prayer, particularly in the later part of the night when supplications are more likely to be answered.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and deep contemplation of its meaning. Understand that each phrase is a declaration of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah), His attributes, and the reality of the hereafter. Pause to reflect on the immense dominion and truth of Allah as you utter each part. The Prophet ﷺ would recite this in his prayer, so it can be incorporated into your own voluntary night prayers after reciting the Quran or during the prostration, or after finishing the prayer.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates the essence of submission, faith, and reliance on Allah. By reciting it, one affirms the truth of Islam's core tenets and seeks Allah's forgiveness for all sins, known and unknown. It is a comprehensive supplication that acknowledges Allah's absolute sovereignty and power, highlighting His role as the Ultimate Judge and Controller of all affairs. The mention of the truth of Paradise, the Fire, the Prophets, and the Hour serves as a powerful reminder of our accountability and the purpose of our existence.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet (ﷺ) when performing the night prayer, would stand for such a long time that his feet would swell. 'Aishah (RA) asked him: 'Why do you do this when your former and latter sins have been forgiven?' He replied: 'O 'Aishah, should I not be a grateful servant?' And in another narration: 'Should I not be a thankful servant?' When he performed the prayer and bowed, he would say: 'O Allah, to You I bow, and in You I believe.' He would then stand from bowing and say: 'O Allah, our Lord, to You belongs all praise.' He would then perform two rak'ahs between the call to prayer and the iqamah, and he would lie down on his right side until the muezzin would come to him. And when he performed the last (Witr) rak'ah, he would say: 'O Allah, forgive me my errors and my ignorance. O Allah, accept my plea in all matters, and grant me what is good in this world and what is good in the Hereafter, for verily I have been pleased with You as a Lord, and with Islam as a religion, and with Muhammad as a Prophet.' Then he would say: 'Subhan al-Malik al-Quddus' (Glory be to the King, the Holy) three times, lengthening the last one.
