Dua for Steadfastness in Qiyam al-Layl

Night Worship & Tahajjud
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1522

اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ

O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You in the best manner.

Allahumma a'inni 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatika

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is excellent to recite before starting Qiyam al-Layl, or even during the day to strengthen your resolve. It's a reminder to seek Allah's assistance in fulfilling the very purpose of our creation – remembering Him, being grateful, and perfecting our worship, which Qiyam al-Layl embodies.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt plea to Allah. Focus on the meaning as you utter the words, envisioning Allah's support enabling you to stay firm in your night prayers. It's best recited with hands raised, though not exclusively so, especially if you are in the middle of your prayer.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a cornerstone for anyone seeking to establish or maintain night prayers. It directly asks Allah for the strength to remember Him (dhikr), which is the essence of worship, and to thank Him (shukr) for the ability to worship. The phrase 'husni 'ibadatika' (worship You in the best manner) encompasses performing prayers with focus, humility, and devotion. By asking for this, we are essentially praying for the inner strength and discipline required for consistent Qiyam al-Layl.

Source & Authentication

Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) took his hand and said: 'O Mu'adh, by Allah, I love you. I advise you, O Mu'adh, do not miss saying after every prayer: O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You in the best manner.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 1522, Sahih). While this hadith is specifically mentioned in the context of after *obligatory* prayers, the principle of seeking Allah's help for remembrance, gratitude, and good worship is universal and perfectly applicable to the demanding practice of Qiyam al-Layl.
