Dua for Sincerity in Night Worship

Night Worship & Tahajjud
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 735

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure provisions, and accepted deeds.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan

When to Read

This dua is perfect to recite at the beginning of your night worship, especially during Tahajjud. As you prepare to stand before Allah in the quiet of the night, purify your intentions. Ask for the ability to perform deeds that are not just physically done, but truly accepted by Him. It's also beneficial to recite this after Fajr prayer, seeking the same sincerity throughout your day's actions.

How to Read

Recite this supplication with a sincere heart, focusing on each word. Visualize asking Allah for these three crucial elements: knowledge that benefits you and others, sustenance that is lawful and good, and actions that are pleasing to Him and therefore accepted. This is a concise yet powerful prayer that sets the tone for a worship session grounded in seeking Allah’s pleasure.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua encompasses three essential aspects of a Muslim's life, all contributing to sincere worship. Beneficial knowledge ('ilman naafi'an) guides our actions and helps us understand our purpose. Pure provisions (rizqan tayyiban) ensure our bodies are nourished by lawful means, which is a prerequisite for accepted worship. Most importantly, asking for accepted deeds ('amalan mutaqabbalan) is the core of sincerity – we want our efforts, especially our precious Tahajjud prayers, to be recognized and rewarded by Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua as a comprehensive request for a righteous life and accepted worship. (Sahih Muslim 735)

Source & Authentication

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ most frequently used to begin his prayer when he got up at night saying: 'O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided, grant me security among those whom You have granted security, take care of me among those whom You have taken care of, give me blessings in what You have bestowed, and save me from the evil of what You have decreed. Verily, You decree and nothing is decreed upon You, and he whom You protect will never be humiliated. Blessed art Thou, O our Lord, and Exalted.' And he would often say this (the following supplication) as well: 'O Allah, forgive me my faults, my ignorance, my exceeding the bounds in my affairs, and all the evil Thou knowest in me. O Allah, forgive me my faults committed intentionally and unintentionally, and forgive me my faults with regard to what I have done, even if that is my duty to you and all of them are with you. O Allah, I ask You for the strength to do the right deeds, and to avoid evil deeds, and to love the poor, and to forgive people, and when You intend to try Your servants with trials, to take me to Thyself without committing any sin. And I ask You to grant me the willpower to be patient and stable. I ask You for the eloquence of speech and the determination to do good. O Allah, grant me the love of the poor, and forgive me. O Allah, grant me the ability to love the poor, and to forgive those who have wronged me, and to be a companion of Your Word. O Allah, grant me the love of the poor, and forgive me, and You are pleased with me.' Umm Salamah said: 'So I asked him: O Messenger of Allah, what is the best supplication for me to recite when I wake up at night?' He said: 'O daughter of my uncle, recite: O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided...' And he mentioned the whole of the first supplication. Then he said: 'And when you pray the two rak'ahs of Fajr, say: O Allah, forgive me my faults, my ignorance, my exceeding the bounds in my affairs...' (He mentioned the second supplication). He also said: 'And when you have prayed (Fajr), say: O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure provisions and accepted deeds.' (Umm Salamah also narrated that when the Prophet ﷺ uttered the words 'and all the evil Thou knowest in me', he would say) 'and all the evil Thou knowest in me, all of it.'
