Night Worship & Tahajjud
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5088

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of character, deeds, and desires.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhathik, wa a'udhu bika min munkaratil akhlaqi wal a'mali wal ahwaa'.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is particularly potent when recited during the sacred hours of Tahajjud (night prayer). As you stand before Allah in the quiet of the night, seeking His closeness and blessings, turning to Him for protection against all forms of evil, including disturbing nightmares and internal struggles, is a profound act of worship. It's also beneficial to recite this upon waking from a bad dream or when feeling troubled by intrusive thoughts.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a sincere heart, raising your hands as you would in supplication. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, truly internalizing your reliance on Allah's protection. Repeat it with conviction, visualizing Allah's boundless mercy shielding you from all harm, both seen and unseen. It’s best to say it after your Tahajjud prayer, as you engage in personal supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses vast protection. By seeking refuge in Allah, we are safeguarding ourselves from the loss of His favors, the reversal of our well-being, His unexpected wrath, and His anger. It extends to protecting our character and actions from falling into what is disliked and guarding our hearts and minds against harmful desires. Reciting it during Tahajjud amplifies its effect, as it's a time when supplications are believed to be readily accepted, and we are actively engaging in seeking Allah's pleasure and protection while most are asleep.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to teach his companions to seek refuge in Allah from the evils mentioned in this dua, especially during times of personal reflection and worship, like the night prayer. This reflects the importance of seeking divine protection not just from external threats but also from internal weaknesses and character flaws that can lead one astray.
