Dua for Physical Health and Comprehensive Well-being During Night Worship

Night Worship & Tahajjud
Sahih HadithKitab Al-Adab (Book of Etiquette) 5074

O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyah fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyah fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali.

When to Read

The Prophet ﷺ taught us this powerful dua to recite daily, both in the morning and evening. While it’s a constant companion, elevating your supplication during the blessed hours of **Tahajjud** (night worship) imbues it with incredible potential for acceptance. Imagine the profound silence of the night, when the world around you is hushed in sleep, and you stand before your Lord in prayer. This is a time when Allah Himself descends to the lowest heaven, asking if there's anyone supplicating, anyone seeking forgiveness, anyone asking for their needs to be met. To ask for comprehensive well-being – which absolutely includes physical health – at such a time is to approach Allah when His mercy is most abundant and His ear is most attentive. So, after you’ve completed your Tahajjud prayers, before the break of Fajr, raise your hands and articulate this profound request for 'afiyah.

How to Read

To recite this dua effectively, your approach should be rooted in sincerity and understanding. You're not just uttering words; you're articulating a heartfelt need to your Creator. 1. **Perform Tahajjud:** Begin by establishing your connection with Allah through sincere night prayers, culminating in prostration and remembrance. 2. **Sincerity (Ikhlas):** Come with a truly sincere heart, believing firmly that Allah alone possesses the power to grant you *'afiyah* – complete well-being, which encompasses strength for your body, peace for your mind, and soundness in your affairs. 3. **Reflection:** As you pronounce *wal-'afiyah*, pause and reflect on all that this word means. It includes not just physical health, but also mental clarity, protection from all forms of harm, ease in your daily affairs, and strength in your faith. Envision what 'improved physical health' means for you, and place your full trust in Allah's boundless capability. 4. **Repetition:** You may repeat this powerful dua several times, slowly and thoughtfully, allowing its meaning to sink deep into your heart. The Prophet ﷺ often repeated his duas.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking *'afiyah* is asking for one of the greatest blessings Allah can bestow upon a believer. It’s a comprehensive request that covers everything from physical vitality to spiritual peace, from financial stability to protection from calamities. * **Holistic Health:** While we specifically focus on 'physical health,' the Arabic term *'afiyah* encompasses a much broader spectrum. It means being sound, healthy, and protected in your body, guarding against illness and weakness. It also extends to your mental well-being, granting freedom from anxiety, and instilling peace of mind. * **Comprehensive Protection:** This dua goes beyond personal health, asking for well-being in your religion, your worldly affairs, your family, and your wealth. It's essentially a plea for Allah to safeguard and ease every significant aspect of your life. Imagine the profound comfort of knowing you've asked your Lord to protect your most precious assets. * **The Power of Tahajjud:** When you make this dua during Tahajjud, you merge the immense blessings of the supplication itself with the unique virtues of night worship. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, comes down every night to the nearest heaven to us when the last third of the night remains, saying: 'Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to his invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone to seek My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?'" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6321). This is truly a golden hour for your supplications concerning health and any other matter. * **Divine Closeness:** Engaging in Tahajjud, and then supplicating with this dua, strengthens your bond with Allah. It’s an act of profound submission and reliance, opening doors to divine assistance and blessings in every facet of your existence, including your physical well-being.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) never failed to utter these supplications in the morning and evening: > **Arabic:** اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ فِي دِينِي وَدُنْيَاىَ وَأَهْلِي وَمَالِي اللَّهُمَّ اسْتُرْ عَوْرَاتِي وَآمِنْ رَوْعَاتِي اللَّهُمَّ احْفَظْنِي مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَىَّ وَمِنْ خَلْفِي وَعَنْ يَمِينِي وَعَنْ شِمَالِي وَمِنْ فَوْقِي وَأَعُوذُ بِعَظَمَتِكَ أَنْ أُغْتَالَ مِنْ تَحْتِي > > **Translation:** "O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my faults, and calm my fears. O Allah, protect me from before me and behind me, from my right and my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Greatness from being unexpectedly seized from below me." > > — Sunan Abi Dawud 5074, graded Sahih by Al-Albani. This longer version of the dua beautifully elaborates on the comprehensive nature of 'afiyah, asking for protection and well-being from all directions and in all aspects of life.
