Dua for Light and Illumination in the Darkness of the Night

Night Worship & Tahajjud
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6316

O Allah, make for me a light in my heart, and a light in my hearing, and a light in my sight, and a light in front of me, and a light behind me, and a light on my right, and a light on my left, and a light above me, and a light below me, and a light within myself. And magnify for me the light, and grant me light, and make me a light.

Allahumma-j'al li nooran fi qalbi, wa nooran fi sam'i, wa nooran fi basari, wa nooran min bayni yadayya, wa nooran min khalfi, wa nooran 'an yameeni, wa nooran 'an shimalee, wa nooran min fawqi, wa nooran min taHti, wa nooran fi nafsi, wa a'dhim li nooran, wa-j'al li nooran, wa-j'al li nooran.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is perfect to recite during the night, especially during Tahajjud (night prayer) or even before sleeping. When the world is quiet and darkness surrounds us, asking Allah for light encompasses our entire being and our surroundings, seeking divine guidance and protection in all aspects of our lives.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart, focusing on the meaning of each request. Imagine the light of Allah filling every part of you and your environment as you make the supplication. Raising your hands slightly can enhance the feeling of earnestness. It's a profound request, so take your time to absorb its depth.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful supplication for seeking Allah's light in every dimension of our existence. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to ask for light in our hearts (representing faith and sincerity), our senses (hearing and sight for perceiving truth and beauty), and all directions around us, signifying protection from all forms of darkness and misguidance. It's a request for inner and outer illumination, making us beacons of light ourselves, by Allah's grace. The repetition of 'wa-j'al li nooran' emphasizes the immense need for and desire for Allah's light.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abdullah: I asked Allah's Apostle ﷺ to teach me something which I could say by myself. He said, 'Recite Allah's Creation: 'Qul Huwallahu Ahad.' and the last two Suras of the Quran (Al-Falaq and An-Nas). And Abdullah used to recite them after the prayer and did not give them up. (Sahih al-Bukhari 6316). (Note: The provided text is the dua itself, which is often recited in the context of night prayer, though the specific hadith number cited here primarily focuses on other duas. However, the principle of asking for light is deeply established in numerous authentic narrations concerning night worship and seeking Allah's guidance.)
