Dua for Inner Strength to Overcome Grief and Sadness During Tahajjud

Night Worship & Tahajjud
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 3564

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and grief, and I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from being overwhelmed by debt and overpowered by men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasal, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-buhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This profound dua is particularly potent during Tahajjud, that blessed time of night worship when the veil between the servant and the Lord is thinnest. When the weight of sadness or grief feels overwhelming, turning to Allah in the quiet solitude of the night, with this supplication, is a powerful act of seeking solace and strength. It's suitable for any time you feel the sting of sorrow, but especially during your nightly prayers.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, preferably while standing in prayer during Tahajjud or after you have finished your Rak'ahs. Imagine yourself pouring your heart out to Allah, truly seeking His protection from these afflictions. The repetition of 'a'udhu bika' (I seek refuge in You) emphasizes the deep reliance you place on your Creator. Feel the words resonate within you as you ask Allah to shield you from the heavy burdens of distress, the paralysis of inaction, the weakness of fear, and the oppressive weight of debt and the subjugation of others.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking refuge from a spectrum of debilitating inner states and external pressures that can fuel grief and sadness. By seeking Allah's protection from distress (hamm) and sorrow (hazan), you are directly asking for relief from emotional pain. The protection from incapacity ('ajz) and laziness (kasal) addresses the inertia that often accompanies sadness, helping you find the will to act. Seeking refuge from cowardice (jubn) and stinginess (buhl) fortifies your character, empowering you to face challenges with courage and generosity. Finally, seeking refuge from overwhelming debt (ghalabatid-dayn) and being overpowered by men (qahrir-rijal) addresses significant sources of worldly anxiety and helplessness. When recited during Tahajjud, this dua is a direct plea to the One who has power over all matters, seeking strength to navigate life's trials with faith and resilience.
