Night Worship & Tahajjud
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 3201

O Allah, I ask You for Your love and the love of those who love You, and for the love of any deed that will bring me to Your love. O Allah, make Your love more beloved to me than myself, my family, and than cold water.

Allahumma inni as'aluka hubbaka wa hubba man yuhibbuka wal-'amalalladhi yuballighuni hubbaka. Allahummaj'al hubbaka ahabba ilayya min nafsi wa ahli wa minal-ma'il-barid.

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent when recited during the blessed hours of Tahajjud (night prayer). The stillness of the night, the deep contemplation, and the act of waking up specifically to worship Allah create a unique atmosphere for earnest supplication. Make it a part of your Tahajjud routine, especially when you feel a need to deepen your connection and love for your Creator.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a heartfelt desire for Allah's love. Focus on the meaning of each word, visualizing yourself truly loving Allah above all else. Raise your hands in supplication as you would during any other dua. It’s best to say it while in a state of worship during Tahajjud, perhaps after your prayers or during prostration.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, attributed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, asks for the highest forms of love: love for Allah, love for those He loves (like the Prophets, righteous people, etc.), and the ability to perform deeds that draw us closer to Him. The request to make Allah's love more precious than oneself, one's family, and even the essential comfort of cold water highlights the profound spiritual yearning this supplication aims to cultivate. Achieving this state of love is a cornerstone of true faith and worship, leading to greater obedience and devotion.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah ibn 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'O 'Abdullah, have I not been informed that you fast all day and pray all night?' I said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Do not do that. Fast for a day and break your fast, pray at night and sleep, for your body has a right over you, and your guests have a right over you. And your wife has a right over you. And it is enough for you to fast three days of every month, for the reward of fasting the whole year.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have the strength for more.' He said: 'Then fast the fast of Allah's Prophet Dawud (David), and break it for a day.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, how was that?' He said: 'It was half of the year.' He said: 'And I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I ask You for Your love and the love of those who love You, and the love of any deed that will bring me to Your love. O Allah, make Your love more beloved to me than myself, my family, and than cold water.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'O 'Abdullah, you have asked about that which the people will be asked about. It is not possible for anyone to have asked Allah for that except that he will be granted it. So do not ask for abundance of fasting and prayer, but rather ask for sincerity of intention.'
