Night Worship & Tahajjud
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3544

O Allah, praise is due to You. You have clothed me with this garment and covered me. You have guided me, so I entered Islam. You have done this for me and inspired me. You have provided for me. So, continue to me Your blessings, my health, my well-being, and Your covering in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You to grant me the blessings of this night and its bounty, and to grant me its (night) prayer, and that my eyes may sleep until it is my last meal of the night.

Allahumma inni as'aluka an tu'ida 'alayya min barakati hadhihil-laylati wa wi'aiha, wa an tarzuqani qiyamaha wa an tanama 'ayni hatta takuna akhir ta'ami minal-layl.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is specifically recited after wearing a new garment, but its spirit can be adapted for immense gratitude before starting night worship (Tahajjud). The core sentiment is acknowledging Allah's blessings in providing physical comforts that enable spiritual acts. Imagine preparing for Tahajjud, having had a nourishing meal and comfortable rest – this is precisely the moment to feel such gratitude. Recite it when you've completed your preparations for Tahajjud and are about to begin, reflecting on how Allah has facilitated this blessed opportunity.

How to Read

The original hadith describes reciting this after wearing a new garment, with emphasis on Allah's provision and guidance. For the purpose of night worship, internalize the meaning of gratitude for every blessing that enables you to stand before Allah at night. Feel sincere appreciation for the physical health that allows you to pray, the comfortable rest that recharges you, and the spiritual guidance that drew you to worship. Make it a heartfelt expression of thanks before you commence your prayers.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua embodies profound gratitude for Allah's countless blessings. By recognizing the physical comforts and guidance that facilitate night worship, we acknowledge that the ability to perform such acts is itself a gift from Allah. This mindset enhances the spiritual experience of Tahajjud, transforming it from a mere obligation into a cherished opportunity. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to express gratitude in all circumstances, and this includes thanking Allah for enabling us to draw closer to Him.

Source & Authentication

The hadith itself refers to wearing new clothing. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: > When the Prophet (ﷺ) used to wear a new garment, he would mention its name (e.g., a shirt or a cloak) and then say: > > **Arabic:** اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ أَنْتَ كَسَوْتَنِي هَذَا أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ خَيْرِهِ وَخَيْرِ مَا صُنِعَ لَهُ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهِ وَشَرِّ مَا صُنِعَ لَهُ > **Translation:** O Allah, praise be to You. You have clothed me with this. I ask You for its good and the good of what it was made for, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for. > > And when he wore a shirt, he would say: > > **Arabic:** اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ أَنْتَ كَسَوْتَنِي هَذَا وَغَطَّيْتَنِي، وَأَنْتَ هَدَيْتَنِي فَأَحْلَلْتَ وَأَسْلَمْتُ، وَأَنْتَ صَنَعْتَ بِي هَذَا وَأَوْزَعْتَنِي، وَأَنْتَ رَزَقْتَنِي، فَأَدِمْ عَلَيَّ نِعْمَتَكَ وَصِحَّتَكَ وَعَافِيَتَكَ وَسَتَرَكَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ أَنْ تُعِيدَ عَلَيَّ مِنْ بَرَكَةِ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ وَوِعَائِهَا، وَأَنْ تَرْزُقَنِي قِيَامَهَا وَأَنْ تَنَامَ عَيْنِي حَتَّى تَكُونَ آخِرَ طَعَامِي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ. > **Translation:** O Allah, praise is to You. While the specific wording in the second part is for a shirt, the underlying theme of gratitude for provision and protection is universal and applicable to the opportunity of night worship.
