O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.
When to Read
This powerful dua is particularly potent when recited during the blessed hours of Tahajjud (night prayer). The stillness of the night, when the world is asleep, offers a unique opportunity for sincere supplication. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often stand in prayer for long periods at night, seeking refuge and making dua. Reciting this after your rak'ahs of Tahajjud, with a heart full of reliance on Allah, is an excellent time to seek relief from overwhelming debt and the worries that come with financial hardship.
How to Read
Make this dua with sincere intention and full reliance on Allah. Raise your hands, as is customary when making dua, especially during Tahajjud. Begin by acknowledging Allah's power and seeking refuge in Him. Repeat the phrases clearly, understanding the meaning of each word. After reciting it, continue to make other specific duas for your financial situation, asking Allah to open doors of lawful provision and guide you towards solutions for your debts. Maintaining this practice regularly, especially during the night, can bring immense peace and help pave the way for financial freedom.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encompasses seeking refuge from several significant burdens, including financial ones. By asking Allah to protect you from the 'burden of debt' (غَلَبَةِ الدَّيْنِ - ghalabatid-dayni) and the 'oppression of men' (قَهْرِ الرِّجَالِ - qahrir-rijal), you are essentially asking for both financial ease and protection from situations where others might exert undue pressure or take advantage due to your financial struggles. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself would frequently seek refuge in Allah from these very things, indicating their seriousness and the importance of seeking Allah's protection. Reciting it during Tahajjud amplifies the potential for its acceptance, as it is a time when Allah descends to the lowest heaven and answers the calls of those who supplicate.

‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to supplicate: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done, and from the evil of what I have not done.' He also used to supplicate: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.' (Sahih Muslim 2708, also part of Sahih al-Bukhari 4423 in a slightly different wording for the first part)
