Night Worship & Tahajjud
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 7

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and acceptable deeds.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent when recited during Tahajjud, the night prayer. Waking up in the stillness of the night, when the world is asleep and your heart is most receptive, is a powerful time to turn to Allah. When facing a significant challenge, a daunting task, or a period of uncertainty, making this dua in your Tahajjud strengthens your resolve and seeks Allah's divine assistance and blessings for the endeavors ahead.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and deep contemplation of its meaning. Begin with praising Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Raise your hands in supplication, focusing on the request for knowledge that benefits, sustenance that is pure, and actions that are accepted by Allah. Pour your heart out to Allah, acknowledging His power and your dependence on Him. It's recommended to repeat it several times, feeling the weight of each word.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking beneficial knowledge allows you to navigate life's complexities with wisdom. Asking for goodly provision ensures your sustenance is blessed and brings ease. The ultimate request for acceptable deeds guarantees that your efforts are recognized and rewarded by Allah, both in this life and the Hereafter. Reciting this in Tahajjud amplifies these benefits, as the night prayer is a time of immense spiritual connection and answered duas, allowing Allah to grant you the courage and strength needed to face challenges with faith.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to ask for refuge from four things, saying: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the Hellfire and the punishment of the grave, and from the trial of the Dajjal and the trials of life and death.' He also used to say: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit, from a heart that does not fear (Allah), from a soul that is never satisfied, and from a supplication that is not answered.' Then he would say: 'O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and richness (contentment).' [Sahih Muslim 7:38]. While the core of the hadith focuses on seeking refuge and asking for specific qualities, the portion 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan' is a well-established supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ for general well-being and acceptance of deeds, often recited after Fajr prayer but profoundly impactful when made during Tahajjud.
