Dua for Welcoming a New Pet: Seeking Allah's Blessings

New Beginnings
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 7025

In the name of Allah. O Allah, You created me and You guide me; You give me food and You give me drink; when I am ill, it is You who restore me to health; You cause me to die, and then You give me life; You will cause me to die and then bring me to life again. I hope that You will forgive my sin on the Day of Judgment. My Lord, grant me wisdom and join me with the righteous. O Allah, I ask of You the goodness of this animal and the goodness of what You have made it to do, and I seek refuge with You from its evil and the evil of what You have made it to do.

Bismillahi, Allahumma anta khalaqtani wa anta tahdini, wa anta tut'imuni wa tasqini, wa idha maridtu fa anta tashfini, wa anta tumituni thumma tuhyini, wa anta tarju an taghfira li khathi'ati yawmad-din. Rabbi hab li hikmatan wa alhiqni bis-salihin. Allahumma inni as'aluka khayra hadhal-hayawan wa khayra ma jubila 'alayhi, wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma jubila 'alayhi.

When to Read

How to Read

Begin with Bismillah (In the name of Allah). Place your hand gently on the pet if they are comfortable with it, or simply face the Qiblah. Recite the initial part of the dua, which is a beautiful reflection on Allah's power over life and guidance, a reminder of His blessings. Then, follow with the specific supplication for the animal, asking for its goodness and seeking refuge from any potential harm. It's a moment to be present, mindful, and connect with Allah regarding this new responsibility.

Virtues & Benefits

Welcoming a pet is a new beginning, and like any new endeavor, it's blessed by starting with the remembrance of Allah. This dua is inspired by the Prophet's ﷺ supplication for seeking Allah's protection and goodness. By reciting it, we are entrusting our new pet to Allah's care, acknowledging Him as the Creator and Sustainer. It's a way to foster gratitude for the joy and companionship pets bring, while also seeking divine protection for them and for ourselves from any potential negative aspects.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Ibn Abbas: 'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to teach them - in the event of an earthquake - to recite: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka khayraha wa khayra ma fiha wa khayra ma arsalta bihi... (O Allah, I ask of You the good of it, and the good of what is in it, and the good of what You have sent with it...)' And he said: 'A'udhu bi 'izzatillahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhiru ('I seek refuge in Allah's might and His power from the evil of what I find and what I fear.') Ibn `Abbas said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'When any of you is married, let him say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka khayraha wa khayra ma jabaltaha 'alayhi, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa min sharri ma jabaltaha 'alayhi. (O Allah, I ask of You its goodness and the goodness of what You have created it with, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what You have created it with.)' And if he is buying a riding camel, let him take hold of its hump and say the like of that.' (Sahih Muslim 7025)
