Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 2130

بَارَكَ اللَّهُ لَكَ، وَبَارَكَ عَلَيْكَ، وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَكُمَا فِي خَيْرٍ

May Allah bless you, and shower His blessings upon you, and unite you both in goodness.

Barakallahu laka, wa baraka 'alayka, wa jama'a baynakuma fi khairin

When to Read

This beautiful dua is traditionally recited by the elders, particularly the father of the bride or groom, or other respected family members, when congratulating the newly engaged couple. It can also be recited by the couple themselves when making sincere supplication to Allah for their upcoming marriage.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and heartfelt intention. The best approach is for the elders present at the engagement ceremony or the couple privately to raise their hands (as is customary for dua) and supplicate with these words, focusing on the meaning and asking Allah to pour His barakah (blessings) into their union.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a comprehensive request for Allah's blessings on the couple's journey together. 'Barakallahu laka' asks for Allah's special favor and prosperity upon the groom (or the person being congratulated). 'Wa baraka 'alayka' extends this blessing to encompass the bride as well, asking Allah to shower His grace upon her and their shared life. Finally, 'wa jama'a baynakuma fi khairin' is a profound plea for Allah to bring them together in a way that is pleasing to Him, leading to a life filled with righteousness, happiness, and mutual well-being.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that when the Prophet ﷺ was asked about the best way to get married, he said: 'The best way is to facilitate marriage. If one of you finds that which pleases him for his wife, then he should get married. And if he finds that difficult, then fasting is what he should do, as fasting is a means of controlling desire.' In another narration concerning the wedding feast (walimah), it is reported that when the Prophet ﷺ gave his blessings to a couple, he would say: 'Barakallahu laka, wa baraka 'alayka, wa jama'a baynakuma fi khairin.' (May Allah bless you, and shower His blessings upon you, and unite you both in goodness.)
