New Beginnings
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 3233

O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, to avoid evil deeds, and to love the poor. And I ask You, when You intend to decree a trial for Your creation, to take me to Yourself without being tested by it. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of the deed which will bring me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'la khayrat, wa tark munakarat, wa hubb al-masakin, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayha ghayra maftun. As'aluka hubbak, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is incredibly relevant for a mother navigating the profound changes and challenges of childbirth and the postpartum period. During pregnancy, as the body prepares for the immense task ahead, and especially during the intense physical and emotional demands of labor and the initial weeks with a newborn, this dua can be a source of immense strength. It's a prayer for divine assistance in doing good, staying away from what displeases Allah, and finding solace in community and devotion during a time of vulnerability and significant transition.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a focused heart, ideally after each obligatory prayer or during moments of quiet reflection. Place your hands over your heart as you recite, imbuing the words with your personal hopes and fears for this sacred journey. Visualize yourself acting upon the good, abstaining from the bad, and drawing closer to Allah's love through your actions and patience. Remembering the love of the poor is a reminder of humility and gratitude, essential during a time of such profound life change.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is comprehensive, asking for the ability to perform good deeds and avoid evil, which is foundational for a Muslim in any phase of life. Specifically for a new mother, it provides a framework for spiritual resilience. It seeks Allah's protection from trials during a time of immense physical vulnerability, asking to be taken in a state of faith. Crucially, it asks for Allah's love, the love of those who love Him (like righteous companions and family), and the love of acts that draw one nearer to Allah. This creates a spiritual compass, guiding the mother to prioritize actions and relationships that nourish her faith and well-being, and that of her family, during this demanding yet rewarding period.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka al-huda, wat-tuqa, wal-'afafa, wal-ghina.' (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment). And he used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'la al-khayrat, wa tark al-munkarat, wa hubb al-masakin, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayha ghayra maftun. As'aluka hubbak, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.' (O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, to avoid evil deeds, and to love the poor. And I ask You, when You intend to decree a trial for Your creation, to take me to Yourself without being tested by it. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of the deed which will bring me closer to Your love.)
