Dua for Embarking on Self-Improvement

New Beginnings
Sahih HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3845

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا.

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and acceptable deeds.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

When to Read

This is a powerful dua to recite at the very beginning of any new endeavor aimed at self-improvement. Whether you're starting a new study habit, trying to incorporate a sunnah practice, or working on refining your character, say this as you set out. It’s perfect for the morning, just as you're about to begin your day's efforts, or right before you sit down to that first study session or task.

How to Read

Recite this sincerely, with your heart focused on seeking Allah's help and acceptance. Raise your hands if you can, as is the etiquette of dua. Imagine the knowledge you seek being truly beneficial, the provision you receive being pure and lawful, and the deeds you perform being pleasing to Allah. This sets a positive intention for your entire self-improvement journey.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates three crucial elements for any personal growth: beneficial knowledge that guides you, pure provision that sustains you without compromising your integrity, and deeds that are accepted, meaning they are done sincerely for Allah and in accordance with His commands. When our efforts in self-improvement are aligned with these, Allah blesses them and makes them fruitful. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often supplicate with this dua after the morning prayer, a testament to its importance at the start of the day's activities.
