New Beginnings
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4923

O Allah, I ask You for its goodness, the goodness of its people, and the goodness of what is within it. And I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil of its people, and the evil of what is within it. O Allah, grant me goodness in it.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayraha wa khayra ahliha wa khayra ma fiha, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ahliha wa sharri ma fiha. Allahumma arzuqni fiha khayran.

Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'When one of you travels and then returns, he should knock on his door and not enter suddenly, so that he does not see what he dislikes. And he should say: O Allah, I seek refuge in the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and in [His dominion] and in [all] the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth, and in the provision of the heavens and the earth, and in the evil of whatever appears and whatever is hidden, and in the evil of the companions of the market and in the evil of the companions of the home. O Allah, grant me goodness in my coming and goodness in my going, and grant me goodness in my leaving and goodness in my staying, and grant me goodness in my family and in my wealth, and grant me goodness in my deed and in my prayer. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of the companions of the home and from the evil of the provision of the home.' Al-Tirmidhi also narrated a similar hadith, and mentioned that the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught them the supplication for entering a house: 'O Allah, I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of its inhabitants, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of its inhabitants.' This latter part is the essence we adapt for a new career.
