Dua for a New Beginning in Learning to Read and Write

New Beginnings
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 368

O Allah, teach me the Book (writing) and the reckoning (calculation), and make me understand questions and correctness, and illuminate my heart, and make me among the knowledgeable, the intelligent, and make me among the people of the Quran.

Allahumma 'allimni al-kitaba wal-hisaaba, wa fahhimni as-su'aala was-sawaaba, wa nawwir qalbii, waj'alni minal-'ulamaa'il-fuhamaa', waj'alni min ahlil-quraan.

When to Read

This dua is perfect for anyone embarking on a new educational journey, whether it's a child starting school, an adult beginning to learn to read and write, or someone seeking to deepen their understanding of the Quran and Islamic knowledge. It's particularly suitable at the beginning of a new academic year, before an exam, or simply when you feel the need for clarity and guidance in your studies. Recite it with sincerity and a sincere intention to learn and benefit from knowledge.

How to Read

Recite this dua with full concentration and a present heart. It’s best to raise your hands as you would when making any other supplication. Begin with praising Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Make this dua with conviction, believing that Allah is the ultimate source of all knowledge and understanding. The clarity of the Arabic pronunciation is important, so strive to learn it correctly.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful supplication encompasses a holistic request for knowledge and understanding. By asking Allah to teach us 'the Book' (writing) and 'the reckoning' (calculation), we are seeking mastery over foundational academic skills. Asking for understanding of 'questions and correctness' shows a desire not just for information, but for the wisdom to apply it appropriately and discern truth from falsehood. Illuminating the heart signifies seeking divine light and guidance in our pursuit of knowledge, which prevents it from becoming a mere worldly tool. Finally, asking to be among the 'knowledgeable, intelligent' and 'people of the Quran' is a profound request for success both in this life and the hereafter, associating our learning with the most noble of pursuits.

Source & Authentication

Ibn Majah narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Jibril came to me and said: 'O Muhammad, do you not wish that I would teach you words which will cure you of ignorance and misguidance?' He said: 'Yes.' Jibril said: 'Say: O Allah, teach me the Book and the reckoning, and make me understand questions and correctness, and illuminate my heart, and make me among the knowledgeable, the intelligent, and make me among the people of the Quran.'
