Daily Morning Routine
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4177

O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this fragrance and the goodness of what it was made for, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this fragrance and the evil of what it was made for.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayra hadhihir-rihi wa khayra ma suni'at lah, wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhihir-rihi wa sharri ma suni'at lah.

When to Read

This beautiful supplication is recited whenever you are about to apply perfume, cologne, or attar. It's a moment to pause and acknowledge Allah's blessings, seeking the good in the scent and its intended purpose, while simultaneously shielding yourself from any potential negative aspects.

How to Read

Hold the perfume or attar, intending to apply it. Recite the dua with sincerity and mindfulness. As you speak the words, reflect on the pleasant aroma and the positive intentions behind wearing it. Imagine the fragrance spreading, and with it, your intention to bring a pleasant aura to your interactions.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a holistic approach to utilizing a permissible pleasure. By asking for the 'goodness of this fragrance and the goodness of what it was made for,' you are aligning your enjoyment with beneficial outcomes, whether it's for personal well-being, pleasing your spouse, or adhering to the Sunnah. Simultaneously, seeking refuge from its 'evil' demonstrates a constant awareness of potential pitfalls, even in seemingly innocent matters. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to be mindful of all aspects of our lives, and this includes the scents we choose to wear.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to seek refuge in Allah from the evil of what he had created. When he would be given a fragrance, he would say: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ هَذِهِ الرِّيحِ وَخَيْرَ مَا صُنِعَتْ لَهُ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ هَذِهِ الرِّيحِ وَشَرِّ مَا صُنِعَتْ لَهُ 'Allahumma inni as'aluka khayra hadhihir-rihi wa khayra ma suni'at lah, wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhihir-rihi wa sharri ma suni'at lah.' (O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this fragrance and the goodness of what it was made for, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this fragrance and the evil of what it was made for.)
