Dua Upon Seeing the Morning Light: A Sunrise of Gratitude

Daily Morning Routine
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5071

O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this day, its opening, its help, its light, its blessings, and its guidance. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of this day and the evil of what comes after it.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khaira hadhal-yawmi, fatḥahu wa naṣrahu wa nūraphu wa barakatahu wa hudāhu, wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhal-yawmi wa sharri ma ba'dahu.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited as the first rays of sunlight appear in the morning. It's a moment to pause, to acknowledge the new day Allah (SWT) has granted us, and to consciously seek His blessings and protection for the hours ahead. Imagine yourself watching the sky change color, feeling the warmth begin to spread – that's the perfect time to lift your hands (or heart) and recite this.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and presence of mind as you witness the sunrise. It’s a personal supplication, so feel the meaning of each word. You can raise your hands palms upwards, as is often done when making dua, and begin by calling upon Allah (SWT). The emphasis is on a heartfelt connection, seeking the best of the day and seeking refuge from its potential harms.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a powerful mindset for starting the day. By asking for the 'opening, help, light, blessings, and guidance' of the day, you're essentially asking Allah (SWT) to make your day easy, successful, illuminating, fruitful, and aligned with His pleasure. Simultaneously, seeking refuge from the 'evil of this day and the evil of what comes after it' is a profound act of reliance and trust in Allah's protection. It helps set a positive, proactive, and protected tone for everything you will encounter, from small challenges to larger decisions.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka khaira hadhal-yawmi, fatḥahu wa naṣrahu wa nūraphu wa barakatahu wa hudāhu, wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhal-yawmi wa sharri ma ba'dahu.' (O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this day, its opening, its help, its light, its blessings, and its guidance. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of this day and the evil of what comes after it.)
