Dua for the Strength to Overcome Morning Doubts and Hesitations

Daily Morning Routine
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from weakness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.

When to Read

This powerful dua is perfect for reciting first thing in the morning, as you wake up. It sets a positive and proactive tone for the day, asking Allah for protection against specific mental and emotional states that can hinder our progress and productivity. If you find yourself waking with a heavy heart, feeling unmotivated, or worried about the day ahead, this is the perfect moment to turn to this supplication.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction. It's best recited when you are fully awake, ideally after you've said the morning *dhikr* (remembrance of Allah). Imagine the words protecting you, shielding your heart and mind from negativity. You can place your hand on your chest as you say it, connecting your intention with the physical act. Repeat it gently, allowing the meaning to sink in.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua offers profound protection. By seeking refuge in Allah from: * **Anxiety (Ham) and sorrow (Hazan)**, you safeguard your mental peace, crucial for facing daily challenges with clarity. * **Weakness ('Ajz) and laziness (Kasal)**, you invoke Allah's help to gain the energy and motivation needed to fulfill your responsibilities. * **Cowardice (Jubn) and stinginess (Buhl)**, you strengthen your resolve and generosity, enabling you to act bravely and give charitably. * **Overwhelming debt (Ghalabatud-dayn) and subjugation by men (Qahrur-rijal)**, you seek Allah's intervention to alleviate financial burdens and protect you from oppression. This dua is a shield against many common struggles that can cloud our mornings and hinder our ability to live up to our potential.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to teach this dua to his companions as a way of seeking protection from various afflictions. It is narrated that when the Prophet (peace be upon him) woke up, he would say: 'La ilaha illallah, Al-Malik Al-Haqq Al-Mubin, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam. La ilaha illallahu Al-Rabb al-'Arsh Al-Karim. La ilaha illallahu, Rabb as-samawati wa Rabb al-ard, wa Rabb al-'Arsh Al-Majid.' Then he would say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka khayra hadha al-yawm, wa khayra ma fihi, wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadha al-yawm, wa sharri ma fihi. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kasali wal-harami wal-'adhabi fi al-qabri.' And when he would go to bed, he would say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahr ar-rijal.' (Note: The second part of the hadith is included for context, with the requested dua being the latter portion of the bedtime supplication, and also taught as a general supplication for daily protection.
