الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي جَعَلَ الْمَاءَ طَهُورًا وَلَمْ يَجْعَلْهُ مِلْحًا أُجَاجًا بِرَحْمَتِهِ.
All praise is due to Allah, Who has made water pure and not salty and bitter, by His mercy.
*Alhamdulillah alladhi ja'ala al-ma'a tahooran wa lam yaj'alhu milhan ujajan bi rahmatih.*
When to Read
This dua is recited right after taking the very first sip of water, especially when you wake up in the morning and feel thirsty. It's a beautiful way to acknowledge Allah's blessings as you begin your day.
How to Read
Take a sip of water. Pause for a moment to reflect on the blessing of water. Recite this dua with sincerity and gratitude. It's recommended to drink water in sips, pausing to say 'Bismillah' before starting and 'Alhamdulillah' after finishing each sip, but this specific dua is for acknowledging the water itself after the first sip.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encapsulates gratitude for a fundamental blessing: clean, life-sustaining water. It reminds us that even the simplest things are from Allah's mercy. By expressing thanks upon drinking, we actively cultivate a habit of gratitude, which is a cornerstone of a fulfilling life for a believer. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to thank Allah for everything, and water is certainly one of His greatest favors. This simple act turns a mundane moment into an act of worship and a source of reward.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Whenever Allah bestows a blessing upon one of his slaves, he should say: Praise be to Allah. And whenever the amount of sinning increases against him, and he does not know how much it is, he should say: O Allah, forgive me whatever I have done in secret and whatever I have done openly. And whenever the favor of Allah is prolonged, he should say: Praise be to Allah. And whenever he sees something that he dislikes, he should say: Praise be to Allah on all circumstances. And whenever he drinks, he should say: Praise be to Allah, Who has made water pure and not salty and bitter, by His mercy. And whenever he becomes comfortable with something of the world, he should say: Praise be to Allah.’
