Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 775

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ السَّمِيعِ الْعَلِيمِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ، مِنْ هَمْزِهِ وَنَفْخِهِ وَنَفْثِهِ

I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from the accursed Satan, from his evil suggestions, his arrogance, and his poetry.

A'udhu billahis-samee'il-aleemi minash-shaytanir-rajeem, min hamzihi wa nafkhhi wa naftih

When to Read

This dua is specifically recommended to be recited upon waking up in the morning, before engaging with the day's activities. It's a powerful way to shield yourself from Shaitan’s insidious whispers and temptations right from the start of your day.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely, focusing on the meaning of seeking Allah's protection. You can recite it once after waking up, ideally before you get out of bed or begin your morning routine. It is also beneficial to accompany this with reciting the last three surahs of the Quran (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) and Ayatul Kursi (Quran 2:255), as these are also potent forms of protection.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua helps to fortify your heart and mind against Shaitan's subtle attempts to misguide you, instill doubt, or incite negative thoughts. It is a proactive measure to ensure your focus remains on Allah and His obedience throughout the day. By seeking refuge in Allah's perfect hearing and knowledge, you acknowledge His supreme power over the whispers of the accursed one.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'When one of you wakes up in the morning, he should say: 'I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from the accursed Satan, from his pride, his poetry, and his madness.' And he should recite this (dua) three times when evening comes, and three times when morning comes.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 775. While the translation mentions 'poetry' and 'madness', the Arabic terms 'hamzihi', 'nafkhhi', and 'naftih' are generally understood to refer to Shaitan’s temptations, his arrogance, and his incitement of falsehood or evil, respectively. Scholars have explained these terms in various ways reflecting Shaitan's destructive influences.)
