Dua for Protection from Depression and Sadness in the Morning

Daily Morning Routine
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, and I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This is a powerful dua to recite every morning after the obligatory Fajr prayer. It's the perfect way to start your day, asking Allah for protection against mental and emotional burdens that can cloud our outlook and productivity.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and conviction. It is best to say it with your hands raised, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to do when making supplication. Focus on the meaning of each phrase and truly feel the need for Allah's protection. Repeating it three times is also a sunnah in many supplications.

Virtues & Benefits

By reciting this dua, you are actively seeking Allah's refuge from significant spiritual and emotional ailments: distress (hamm) and sadness (hazan), which are the roots of depression. You also shield yourself from a lack of capability (ajz) and sloth (kasal), which can lead to unfulfilled potential and missed opportunities. Furthermore, you seek protection from fearfulness (jubn) and miserliness (bukhl), character flaws that can hinder personal growth and generosity. Finally, you ask for deliverance from the heavy burden of debt and the oppressive control of others, both of which can cause immense worry and grief.
