غُفْرَانَكَ، الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَذْهَبَ عَنِّي الأَذَى وَعَافَانِي

I seek Your forgiveness. All praise is due to Allah, Who removed from me that which was harmful and granted me well-being.

Ghufraanak, al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi adh-haba 'annil-adha wa 'aafaani

When to Read

This dua is recited immediately after exiting the toilet. It's a moment to reflect on the completion of a bodily need and to turn our hearts back to Allah in gratitude and recognition of His favors.

How to Read

Recite this dua aloud or softly as you step out of the toilet area. The focus should be on sincerity and remembrance of Allah's blessings, acknowledging His perfect care and provision. It's an act of turning away from the physical release and turning towards the spiritual essence of gratitude. The first part, 'Ghufraanak' (I seek Your forgiveness), acknowledges our shortcomings and reliance on Allah's mercy, while the second part, 'al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi adh-haba 'annil-adha wa 'aafaani' (All praise is due to Allah, Who removed from me that which was harmful and granted me well-being), is a profound expression of thanks for physical health and relief.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua embodies gratitude for a basic but essential bodily function, recognizing Allah's power to remove harm and bestow health. It's a beautiful reminder that even our physical needs are met through His grace. The act of seeking forgiveness acknowledges our human frailty and continuous need for His mercy. By making this a habit, we elevate a mundane action into an act of worship, constantly reinforcing our connection with Allah throughout the day, even in seemingly small moments.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Dharr: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'When one of you goes to the toilet, let him say: Ghufraanak.' (Upon returning) he said: ''Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi 'allamani al-din wa 'aafaani.' (All praise is due to Allah, Who taught me religion and granted me well-being). The narrator said 'Alaa ad-din' (i.e. Islam). However, the correct version of the hadith as narrated by Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah is: 'When one of you comes out of the toilet, let him say: Ghufraanak, al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi adh-haba 'annil-adha wa 'aafaani.' (I seek Your forgiveness. All praise is due to Allah, Who removed from me that which was harmful and granted me well-being).
