Seeking Divine Guidance to Recognize and Combat Hypocrisy (Munafiqeen)

Guidance & Hidayah
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3832

O Allah, show me the truth as truth, and enable me to follow it. And show me falsehood as falsehood, and enable me to avoid it. And do not make it confusing for me, lest I follow the desires of ignorance.

Allahumma arini al-haqqa haqqan, warzuqni ittiba'ahu, wa arini al-batila batilan, warzuqni ijtinabahu, wa la taj'alhu multabisan 'alayya fa-attabi'a ahwaa'a jahalah.

When to Read

This dua is profoundly relevant when facing situations where the lines between right and wrong seem blurred. It is particularly useful during times of social or political uncertainty, or when encountering individuals whose sincerity is in question. Reciting it before making significant decisions or when feeling overwhelmed by conflicting information can help clarify your path.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and deep reflection. Understand each word: asking Allah to clearly distinguish truth from falsehood, and crucially, to grant you the strength and ability to act upon what is true and to abstain from what is false. It's not just about seeing, but about *doing*. Maintaining a state of ritual purity (wudu) while reciting is recommended.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly addresses the core challenge of discerning truth and falsehood, a key aspect of avoiding hypocrisy and deception. By asking Allah to reveal the truth and grant the ability to follow it, and similarly for falsehood, we seek protection from falling into ignorance and following desires blindly. Hypocrisy (Nifaq) is a grave spiritual disease, and this supplication is a powerful tool to safeguard oneself against it by seeking clear vision and the strength to act upon it.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from 'Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to supplicate: 'Allahumma arini al-haqqa haqqan, warzuqni ittiba'ahu, wa arini al-batila batilan, warzuqni ijtinabahu, wa la taj'alhu multabisan 'alayya fa-attabi'a ahwaa'a jahalah.' (O Allah, show me the truth as truth, and enable me to follow it. And show me falsehood as falsehood, and enable me to avoid it. And do not make it confusing for me, lest I follow the desires of ignorance.)
