Seeking Allah's Protection from the Lure of Forbidden Wealth

Guidance & Hidayah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2721

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالعَفَافَ وَالغِنَى

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina

When to Read

This is a powerful and comprehensive supplication that can be recited at any time, but it is particularly beneficial to make it a part of your regular duas, especially during times of personal reflection, after obligatory prayers, or when you feel a particular weakness in your resolve against temptation. It’s a proactive way to strengthen your inner defenses against the allure of ill-gotten gains.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and conviction. Raise your hands as you would for other supplications, embodying humility before Allah. Understand the meaning of each word: guidance (huda) to the right path, piety (tuqa) to fear Allah and avoid His displeasure, chastity ('afaf) to be protected from unlawful desires (including wealth), and self-sufficiency (ghina) to be content with what Allah has provided and not be driven by greed.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a holistic request for spiritual well-being. Seeking guidance keeps us on the straight path, piety strengthens our resolve to obey Allah and avoid His prohibitions, chastity protects us from succumbing to temptations that could lead to acquiring wealth through unlawful means (like bribery, theft, usury, fraud), and self-sufficiency fosters contentment, reducing the desire for more than what is rightfully ours. It's a profound request for inner strength and protection.
